Прибежавший к реке отец сразу кинулся в воду, чтобы спасти сына, однако было уже поздно.
Река Дэйнтри протекает в местности, считающейся, по данным Агентства по защите окружающей среды Квинсленда (EPA), привилегированной территорией крокодилов. Предполагается, что в реке обитает как минимум сотня взрослых особей. Крокодилы находятся под охраной правительства, однако власти имеют право уничтожить того, кто будет нападать или угрожать людям. Впрочем, как попросили родители погибшего мальчика, крокодила-убийцу не будут убивать, а отправят в зоопарк или на ферму.
Это уже второй трагический случай, связанный с крокодилами, который произошел в Австралии за последние полгода. В сентябре 4-метровый обитатель реки Индевор, все в том же штате, съел шотландского туриста, отправившегося в поход со своей женой. Как отмечают местные жители, обильные дожди и, следственно, поднявшийся уровень воды в реках, а также наступление сезона размножения крокодилов увеличили количество случаев появления рептилий на глазах людей. В прошлом месяце EPA выпустило официальное предупреждение, в котором попросило местных жителей остерегаться крокодилов и змей.
